The Opportunity
As the business evolved, there was an opportunity to move beyond the visual language of short-stay accommodation and reposition Onshore Breaks as a more distinct and elevated hospitality offering.
The existing identity did not fully reflect the quality of the stays, the care taken in property presentation, or the founders’ deep connection to the region. There was a gap between the experience being delivered and how the brand was being perceived.
The challenge was to create a brand that felt grounded in place, personal in service, and confident in its positioning within the competitive Great Ocean Road accommodation market.
Positioning the Brand
Our work focused on clarifying the brand’s role as a leader in boutique coastal and bushland retreats.
The strategy was anchored in the idea of in-between — the space suggested by the name itself. The place where ocean meets forest, movement meets stillness, and wild landscapes meet considered comfort.
This positioning provided a clear foundation for the brand — balancing a sense of adventure with rest, and aligning the experience of the place with the experience of the stay.
Brand Identity & Visual Language
The visual identity draws directly from the surrounding landscape.
An earthy and oceanic colour palette reflects bushland greens, sand, seaweed and coastal textures. Typography was selected to feel modern yet warm — humble in tone, but refined in execution.
A bespoke illustration system introduces tactility and emotion. Handcrafted watercolour textures and organic forms reference rolling hills, coastal vegetation and the meeting of land and sea, reinforcing the sensory quality of the Otways.
The result is an identity that feels both elevated and deeply connected to place — expressive without being overstated.
Digital Experience
The brand was extended into a calm, intuitive digital experience.
The website was designed to feel immersive and considered, allowing the properties and surrounding environment to lead the storytelling. Structure and navigation were kept simple, supporting ease of exploration, booking and discovery.
This created a seamless connection between brand and experience — ensuring the digital touchpoint reflects the same sense of clarity and care as the physical stays.
Brand System & Delivery
The identity system was applied across a full suite of brand assets, including primary and secondary identities, marketing materials and a detailed brand governance framework.
A comprehensive brand book supports consistency across all touchpoints — enabling the business to grow while maintaining clarity and cohesion in how it presents.
This systemised approach ensures the brand can scale — supporting both guest experience and communication with property owners.
The Outcome
Onshore Breaks is now positioned as a distinctive boutique hospitality brand within the Great Ocean Road region.
The refreshed identity creates a stronger emotional connection with guests, builds confidence with property owners, and provides a clear platform for future growth.
More broadly, the project demonstrates how brand strategy and identity design can elevate hospitality businesses — moving beyond functional accommodation to create experiences that feel considered, personal and grounded in place.
